5th grade studied African Mask forms and their use of line and shape. We discussed high and low relief. After designing their masks with pencil, they began laying down the lines with spaghetti noodles and yarn. After they finished the lines, other forms of pasta were added for additional shapes and details. When they returned the following week and once all the gluing was done and dried, the students applied a coat of brown under-paint and gold on top for a patina-look.
